How Traf works

Traf is acoustic analysis for the indelicate. You record a rip, the Ripter Scale scores it, and your mates see where it lands. Here is the whole loop.

Record

Open the app and hold the button. Up to ten seconds, hard stop. You hear it back before anything is submitted, and you can bin it and go again.

Score

The recording goes to the Ripter Scale, Traf's acoustic model. It takes eleven measurements of the sound, among them duration, loudness, how the energy is distributed across the clip and the balance of tone against noise, and returns one number out of ten. A second model checks the recording is genuine before it is scored at all: silence, burps, voices, raspberries, playback of someone else's recording and sound effects are rejected with a note on what was detected.

Every score comes with a title and a line of commentary, written for that rip. They are for the rip, not for you: Traf has no levels, ranks, tiers or streaks. The score is the score.

League

Scores go onto the leaderboard of a league. A league is private: you create one, share its invite code with your mates, and nobody outside it can see anything posted in it. Most people are in more than one.

Leagues are ranked on your best single recording of the season, with your average as the tie-break. Submitting more does not buy you a position.

Peers decide

Everyone in the league can rate everyone else's recordings on a slider. Once anyone has rated a rip, the peer rating replaces the model's score outright. The model gets the first word; your mates get the last.

Seasons

Every league runs in seasons, weekly by default, resetting Sunday night in the league's timezone. When a season closes the top ten are frozen into that league's history, the winner is announced, and the next season starts immediately. Old seasons stay on the record.

Challenges

Any two people who share a league can go head to head. Best of one or best of three, with a stake attached: a round of beers, lunch, coffee, or just the bragging rights. Stakes are on your honour; the app keeps the record of who owes whom and lets either side mark it settled. Challenge recordings do not count towards league standings.

Sharing

Any of your own recordings can be shared as a link. The link opens in any browser and plays without the app, so the person you sent it to can hear what they are getting into before installing anything. If they have Traf, the same link opens it in the app. Sharing is yours alone to do, only for your own recordings, and a link can be withdrawn at any time.

Prize leagues

Some leagues play for a prize: a voucher or gift card, awarded to the season winner. Entry is always free. The prize rules set out how a winner is decided and how long they have to claim.

What it costs

Nothing. Traf is free to download and free to use. There is no subscription and nothing to buy in the app.
